Is there a way for me to get involved as a parent?
Yes! Our school does have a Parent Council that meets once every month. We also welcome volunteers in our school to help with various classroom and office duties. Additionally the Parent group host many family events at the school such as family game night, movie night, and international food potlucks.
What will my child get at KNOVA that he/she will not get at other schools?
Your child will receive individualized instruction in mathematics and literacy, an extended school day, extended courses in core subjects, and frequent assessment to better track his/her learning. KNOVA’s student centered classrooms help student instill a passion to be lifelong learners.
How much is tuition?
KNOVA Learning Public Charter School is a FREE school open to the public; there is no tuition.
Where is the school located?
KNOVA is in the Rockwood neighborhood in Gresham. Our address is 18201 SE Stark.
What are the school hours?
Students (1-7) attend school from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday;
Students in kindergarten attend school from 7:00 to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday;
ALL students are dismissed at 1:00 p.m. every Thursday.
How long has KNOVA Learning Public Charter School been open?
KNOVA has been open since 2010. We opened K-5 and add a grade up every year until we are a full K-8.
Do you offer an after-school care program?
KNOVA partners with the YMCA. There is an additional cost for this program. If your student participates in the program, a KNOVA team member will walk your student to the program after school.
Will breakfast and lunch be provided?
Yes. Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. KNOVA participates in the Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program.
Is transportation provided?
KNOVA does not offer transportation to the school. We are conveniently located one block off the MAX line and car pools are encouraged.
What is the school’s academic program?
KNOVA administers Direct Instruction (DI) programs in Reading, Mathematics and Language. Upon acceptance to the school, all students are given a performance test and are placed into small groups with other students that are performing at the same level. The DI program is delivered to mastery, meaning that the students must master each skill before moving to the next one. Natural World and Global Studies classes are taught using the Core Knowledge Sequence and FOSS science kits. The Core Knowledge Sequence is unique among educational programs for its presentation of a coherent and cumulative progression of knowledge and skills. Science is hands on and led by student inquiry, while Global Studies is hands on and project based. KNOVA also uses Saxon Math and Novel studies for our middle school students. All grade levels also participate in a writer’s workshop, encouraging an excitement for writing. For health KNOVA uses the Great Body Shop. Although each curriculum is very different from one another they were selected because the offer a well-rounded balanced approach to education.
What electives will be offered?
Electives change based on the demand from our students. We currently offer Spanish and Art.
What is the character education curriculum?
We feel that character builds the foundation for personal success. Every 2 weeks, our elementary and middle school assemblies have a theme, such as Justice, Ambition and Perseverance. All of our students are encouraged to model the KNOVA Leader values of Responsible, Respectful, Safe, and Hardworking. Students who display these values are rewarded and recognized.
What grades are you currently enrolling?
We are currently enrolling Kindergarten through Seventh Grade for this school year. Next year, we will graduate our first 8th grade class.
How do I submit my application?
You may email your application to [email protected] or fill it out on line under intent to apply. You are also welcome to come into the school and fill out an application in person. We often have more applications than we do spots. When that happens, KNOVA will hold a random lottery filling students’ seats.
